Weight and quality of gold
Both investment and jeweller´s gold features indicators of quality and weight.
Weight
The weight of gold is usually specified in troy ounces (oz), more rarely in grammes (g) or shekels. Thoughout the world the standard unit of measure of gold is ounces, in Latvia we use grammes as a basic unit of weight measurement.
Quality
The quality of gold is defined by its chemical compound. In jewellery, gold is usually made of an alloy with other metals. Investment gold has first-rate quality as it is not alloyed with other metals and consists only of pure gold. The percentage of gold in a product is designated in carats (K); however, in Latvia it is shown as a percentage. Absolutely pure or 100 % gold cannot be found in nature; therefore pure gold is designated 999.9 fine or accordingly as 24 carat. Such gold is known as investment gold.

Gold is a very heavy metal. The density of pure gold is equal to 19 621 cubic kilograms (the weight of a pure gold sphere with a diameter of 46mm is1kg)
